Surrounded by the Aegean Sea, you are in for a wonderful gastronomic experience with the selection of restaurants in Syros Greece. This little Greek Island doesn’t disappoint when it comes to eating out and offers an array of restaurants that every palate will enjoy.

We spent months devouring all the best food in Syros. From traditional Cycladic Greek food to fusion blends, the Syros restaurant scene will have you wanting to extend your trip!

Best Restaurants in Syros

After spending many months in Syros, we definitely got a good lay of the restaurant land!  I only wish I had found some of these Syros restaurants sooner.

So, this list is for you in hopes that you will enjoy as many of these restaurants in Syros as possible. From the charming alleyways to the gorgeous sunny waterfront, the dining options in Syros are endless!

While the best restaurants in Syros are scattered throughout this Greek island, the majority of Syros cafes and restaurants are located in Ermoupolis; many with incredible views.

Best Restaurants in Ermoupolis Syros

The following restaurants and cafes are located in the heart of Ermoupolis, the downtown area of Syros.

📍 EPTA

This is a cute cafe with a lovely staff. It’s a great place to grab some wifi and breakfast. The alley where it sits is picturesque and just off the main square. Digital nomads tend to flock to this Syros cafe and love it.

My only complaint is smokers. If you aren’t a fan and get stuck near someone smoking in an alley, it really isn’t a pleasant experience.

📍 JAR

JAR quickly became one of our go-to places for breakfast and lunch. I did a search for healthy restaurants in Syros when we arrived and JAR was one of the first places that caught my eye.

They have delicious fresh squeezed juices (including green juices), smoothie bowls, avocado toast, pancakes, and more.

JAR is a healthier, more mindful eatery in a cute alley about a block from the main square!

A healthy restaurant in Syros, JAR was our go to for a healthy meal and fresh juice.

🚬 (I won’t keep repeating myself, but if smoking bothers you, Europe is a hard place to enjoy a restaurant meal if you get stuck next to a smoker in a small space.) 🚬

📍 Armadillo Coffee Brewery

This is the best place for coffee, as well as delicious fresh juices (green juice here as well). They also have very good breakfast and brunch eats, including some vegan options. Armadillo also had to-go fresh pressed juices, which are a nice option while walking around on a hot day!

📍 The Corner Cafe

I don’t recommend this place if you are sensitive to smoking because I constantly see people smoking INSIDE all the time. I just couldn’t get past it to ever order anything.

📍 Street Food

This hidden gem in Syros is a tiny restaurant (more like a little hole in the wall – but delicious). It is located on the same street as the fruit and veggie stands.

Street Food serves both vegetarian and meat options for Gyros, Falafel, and many other quick bites to eat on the go! The vegetarian souvlaki is made of beans and veggies (not just soy!).  It’s a small place and easy to miss. They have about 2 tables outside, but we always took ours to go.

📍 King of Pasta

We loved the pesto sauce from this little cafe-style restaurant in a cute location in Syros. King of Pasta is perfect for a quick easy bite to eat or for take-away food. They do have several outside tables in a quieter cute alley.

📍 Appaloosa

This is one of the larger restaurants in Syros serving delicious Mexican-influenced cuisine in an outdoor, yet enclosed setting. It is located right on the main square in Ermoupolis Syros, making it convenient for the kids to play after dinner!

Appaloosa’s salads are super yummy and sometimes they have live music.

📍 Amvix

This restaurant is located near the port in Syros. It is your place for fresh pizza dough and probably the best pizza in town. They also have delicious salads and will do everything for take away too.

📍 Ousyra

This Italian restaurant in Syros has fantastic Italian food & homemade pasta.  Plus it has cute indoor space and nice outdoor seating as well.

📍 Mammos

Located on the Syros waterfront promenade, this restaurant offers ample indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was super friendly and the menu offered a variety of cuisine to suit everyone!

We went for brunch or lunch a few times and even got dinner to go a few times. The salads were always a hit, as was the soup and Acai bowl.

I was told Mammos has very good cocktails too. (Although I can’t say from experience as I wasn’t drinking alcohol during our time in Greece because I had a newborn baby!)

Mammos restaurant in Syros was located along the waterfront and had a delicious brunch, such as this fresh orange juice and yogurt bowl.

📍 Mazi Syros

Mazi in Syros was one of the first restaurants I visited when we arrived. (The worldschool, Boundless Life Syros had their opening event at Mazi.) That really set the bar high! The atmosphere is amazing, the food is fantastic and the service is superb.

As far as restaurants in Syros, it is a bit on the expensive side. But don’t let that deter you. The prices are quite reasonable and it’s worth making a reservation and experiencing Mazi Syros yourself.

Plus, Mazi is located in an alleyway just off the main square of Ermoupolis.

📍 Λαουτάρι Laoutari Kafreneio

I never made it hear during our few months in Syros. Not sure how that happened, as even our local friends said this was a gem in Syros. It really looks like the cutest Greek Tavern and you’ll surely enjoy a delicious local Syros meal.

The decor is cute, a little old-fashioned, a little eclectic. I would put this Syros restaurant on your must-try list. Make up for the fact that I didn’t!

📍 Petit Syros

Crepes in Syros! We somehow missed out on this cute eatery for the first couple of months we were in Syros. Once we found Petit Syros, we made it part of our weekly rounds! They have a few tables outside, but it is an easy place for take-away or a quick meal.

There are a few tables in the alley way outside of this Syros restaurant in Ermoupolis which serves Crepes!

📍 Arhontariki

This restaurant is located in a cute alley (same row as JAR & Armadillo). They are open most of the year and do delicious takeout as well. But eating at the restaurant is charming.

I highly recommend their potato salad, grilled sardines, and Hermoupolis Salad. Their bean salad is delicious too when they have it in season! Arhontariki is also a great place to try a local Syros handmade leek pie!

The homemade Leek Pie is a local Syros specialty, which these kids were excited to dig into at Arhontariki Restaurant in Ermoupolis.

📍 Seariani Fish Restaurant

Delicious seafood restaurant, but they are not open year-round. Just make sure you don’t make the mistake we did and not ask the price of one of the market fish before we ordered it.

Even though it was one of the most expensive meals we had in Syros (because of the market fish), it was worth every penny!

📍 Advant Garden

We never ate here because they were never open whenever we were out restaurant hunting. They don’t open until later for dinner and close completely in the off-season. However, it looked like a lovely setting and we heard they have really good food.

📍 Tsipouradiko tis Myrsinis

This is one of my personal favorite restaurants on the waterfront main port street. The beet yogurt salad is delicious, as are the grilled sardines and green salads. The restaurant has cute decor, as well as outdoor & indoor seating.

At the end of the meal, they bring adults a shot of sweet liquor and everyone gets an ice cream popsicle – a fun way to end the meal and sit a little longer to people-watch along the waterfront in Syros!

These ice cream bars, along with shots of liquor, are served at the end of your meal at this restaurant in Syros called Tsipouradiko tis Myrsinis.

Tips for Eating at Restaurants in Syros

Ready to try out a Syros restaurant but looking for a few tips? Here are our pro tips and insight into eating out in Syros.

🚬 The downside of Europe, in my opinion, is all the smoking. It’s everywhere, including restaurants. Restaurant smoking is mostly limited to outdoors, but it’s hard to escape being in the direct path of someone smoking.

🥬 If you are vegetarian or vegan, make sure to ask if meat comes on your dish. It comes in most salads, even if it is not obvious by the description on the menu.

🍽️ Some restaurants in Syros close in the off-season, and others close just for a week or two while they take a vacation. There may be a sign on the door saying when the restaurant will be reopening and other times there will be no sign of them being open and then poof, just like that they are back at it the next day!

Where to Find the Best Sweet & Treats in Syros?

Of course, if we are talking about where to eat in Syros, we need to mention the pastries and sweets! Here are some of the best places for dessert in Syros.

📌 Artisti Προζύμι

We frequented this bakery a lot. It’s open 24/7. And believe me, this is gold in a city that takes siesta and Sundays seriously!

You can find a quick breakfast, lunch, or even a light dinner here between the fresh bread, to-go sandwiches, salads, yogurt parfaits, spanakopita, and lots of pastry options.  Plus, it is conveniently located at Miaouli Square (the town square).

There were a couple of ladies who worked here who were exceptionally nice and always excited to see the kids! Our kids seem to have learned during our time world schooling that if they try to speak the local language, they are usually met with smiles and extra treats!

This bakery in Syros is open all hours of the day and is located right in the center of town in Ermoupolis.

📌 Athymarites

One of the best places in Syros to get a variety of chocolate treats!  They also make themed holiday treats, cookies, and ice cream. This quickly becomes everyone’s go-to dessert place.

📌 Dejango Gelato

If this is open, it has to be on your list!  The best ice cream (ahem, Gelato) on the island. Made with simple, pure ingredients and a lot of love, they have unique flavors.

My favorite is Salted Pistachio and Yogurt, while my husband liked the Chili Chocolate and my kiddos loved the Pineapple and Peach (well, let’s be honest, they liked them all)!  Most of the time, Dejango’s were whipping up a batch of handmade gelato when we walked in!

It does close during the off-season. Although, fear not, they do have a location in Athens that remains open!

Syros Greece is quite affordable! Actually, it is one of the most affordable places we have been to in Europe.

Greece as a country is an affordable destination, but given that the island of Syros is less of a typical tourist island than islands like Santorini or Mykonos, you’ll find Syros budget-friendly!

Of course, affordability is different for everyone. While Syros Greece is certainly more affordable than a vacation in Tuscany, it is less affordable than a trip to Colombia!

Is Syros very touristy?

One of the reasons we fell in love with Syros is because it isn’t as touristy as the popular neighboring islands such as Mykonos and Santorini. Most of the local population live here year-round, so you’ll find that shops and restaurants remain open throughout most of the year instead of just in high season.

Of course, the summers are high season and more crowded. Domestic tourists love to visit Syros in the summer too and the beaches of Syros become a bit more crowded.

In the early Fall, we saw a few smaller day cruise ships come into port with international tourists as well.

How to get to Syros?

To get to Syros, you’ll likely fly into Athens, the major international airport on the mainland in Greece. Traveling from Athens to Syros, you can choose a few options: take the Blue Star Ferry, fly on a small island hopper airplane, or there is always the option for private helicopter transportation.

Once you arrive on the island, you can choose to rent a car in Syros or take a taxi to get around the island!
